The ecosystem services map layers are now publicly available in the map application. The application includes more than 60 data layers covering, among other things, ecological condition, habitat services, provisioning services, cultural ecosystem services, and regulating ecosystem services. All map layers are available for download and can be found in the Ecosystem Services section.
The methodology for mapping ecosystem services is continuously being developed by the Estonian Environment Agency, and work is also underway to automate data updates.
The ecosystem services information page and maps support evidence-based spatial planning by helping local governments and real estate developers make informed land-use decisions. They enable planners to prioritise development in areas where the overall provision of ecosystem services is lower, thereby helping to preserve the country's most valuable natural areas and maintain their ecological integrity. Before proceeding with development, users can assess whether the expected economic benefits outweigh the environmental impacts and the associated loss of ecosystem services.
